Who Am I?

As a recent graduate with a degree in English within a secondary education program, I knew that I didn’t have any guarantees of finding a good teaching job in my home state of Michigan.   I decided that, if I was about to move away for two or three years in order to get job experience, I should pursue something unique: an adventure, perhaps.
Before I even started student teaching, I interviewed for a teaching position at an international school in Indonesia.  A little more than a month later, I was offered a contract.
Many of the people I love and care about have asked me if I would be keeping a blog, and told me that they would be checking my Facebook for photos and updates. Since I don’t want to make the struggles and joys of my daily life excessively public, I decided to create a blog, with the goal of creating a more realistic look at what I am hoping will become one of many greatest and exciting learning experiences.  That way, my experiences are open for anyone to read about and learn from, but aren’t in easy facebook-stalking distance.
Hopefully, I will be able to write diligently and intentionally, and you will be able hear about my struggles and triumphs as I work to be come a better teacher, a better writer, and a world traveler.

  1. I’m glad they convinced you to keep us all up to date! How’s teaching going so far? Once I graduate, I plan on teaching english abroad as well, but I get the sense that mine will be a little less.. professional then yours. From what I understand, teaching English in an international school is one of the top tiers of teaching english abroad. My hope is that I get a position in a government run school in S.E. Asia.

    • Thanks for following!
From talking to people around SE Asia about teaching English, it seems like Thailand would have a good market, through independent companies and more well known organizations (English First comes to mind). When in comes to teaching in a government school in Indonesia, it gets…tricky. (I don’t even know if I would be able to teach in a national school here….) And, while it isn’t in SE Asia, I think Hong Kong would be another good place to look for placements. Let me know if you have any questions: I may not have the answers but I will try my best! 🙂

  2. Hello,

I am the content editor for EasyExpat.com and have been following your blog since you listed it with us at BlogExpat. I think it would be great in our series of expat interviews. This would entail questions about being an expat, a few pictures, and it would link back to your blog.

Here is a link to our latest interviews: http://interviews.blogexpat.com/blog/english

If you are interested, just let me know and I will send the questionnaire. In any case, keep up the good work!
